Freedom and Oppression: The Role of Music in Democracy
Posted on December 28, 2023, by David Ramael
In June 2024, 16-year-olds will be able to vote in the European elections for the first time, expanding the democratic process and allowing millions more to participate in free elections. However, this milestone comes at a time when democratic values are being challenged, and authoritarian leaders are gaining popularity at the expense of freedom and democracy.
Composers and artists have always played a crucial role in society’s quest for freedom and self-realization. Beethoven exemplifies this pursuit in his works, such as the 9th Symphony and the Egmont Overture, which portrays Count Egmont’s resistance against Spanish oppression.
It is essential to remember how fragile our freedoms are. Even in the US, not long ago, artists had to answer for their political actions and beliefs. With upcoming elections, a second Trump administration could pose a greater threat to US democratic institutions.
I am grateful for my upcoming concerts on January 12th, 2024, with the Belgian National Orchestra. These performances will showcase the orchestra’s talents to a new generation of concertgoers and highlight how composers have fought for democratic freedoms throughout history. Hopefully, their music will inspire our newest generation of voters to safeguard our democratic ideals.
I’m grateful for my concerts on January 12th, 2024, with the Belgian National Orchestra. I’ll be showcasing their talents to a new generation of concertgoers. More importantly, I’ll be highlighting how composers fought for democratic freedoms in different eras. Hopefully, their music will inspire our newest generation of voters to safeguard our democratic ideals!
Join us in celebrating the power of music and its role in defending democracy!
